Love Changes Everything

“I’m never going to get married
My animals are all I need”
The young girl would often say
To whoever would take heed

Then one day she met someone
And took a chance of fate
Would he be the one for her
The consequence may be too great

He thought she was too young for him
But she did not agree
The wait seemed endless for him to choose
Somehow she’d make him see

Before too long they were together
A couple, an item, a pair
Their love for each other began to grow
As more time they began to share

The future for her began to change
Now there were new ideas to explore
How happy she’d be with him by her side
To love and be loved forever more

At first there were the wedding plans
Which had to change when fate stepped in
A baby on the way to complete the change
So much joy these events will bring

Due to a difference in religion
Their marriage will not be trouble-free
But love will carry them over many hurdles
Respect and truth, give and take, cést la vie

Trina Graves – 24th April 2002

About This Poem

This poem is about my youngest daughter and the beginning of her relationship that began with many doubts because of a difference in religion (she was non-religious, but brought up in a family background of Christianity, and he was a Jehovah’s Witness) and an age gap of eleven years – which although at some stages makes no difference, did at that point because she was only eighteen.

They married in May 2002 and now have one daughter (16) and three sons (14, 6, 4), along with two dalmatian dogs (who have had two litters of puppies in recent years!) As with all marriages there have been many ups and downs, but their love gets them through.

My daughter is now more Spiritually inclined and her husband is no longer a Jehovah’s Witness, but still believes in many of their teachings. Their children have not been brought up to follow any ‘religion’ but have learned from their father about his faith and from their mother of her thoughts and ideas. And of course, I talk to them about my own Spiritual belief and, with the older ones, encourage them to search for their own truth.

    • I’m so glad you liked the poem and thank you so very much for the nomination. However, after starting my blog and receiving several nominations I thought it through and chose to not participate in these awards. The time it takes to do them them – in the manner they deserve – is considerable and therefore I would have less time to write poems and add to my Spiritual Quotes To Live By website. I am very grateful that you chose me and really do appreciate your encouraging words and thoughtfulness. Thank you. Although I don’t take part in these awards, I do enjoy reading all the entries and it is a wonderful way to find more like-minded bloggers.
